Those of you looking for a restoration site, sorry. This car is missing so many of the original parts the purists may not like
it. But this is a frame off rebuild. My goal is that the car looks original from a distance and up close just looks cool.
Car History:
Don't know much other than at one point the car was parted out and left for dead buy the second owner.
After 30 years it is now a standard coupe with a 350. The front clip, who knows where it ended up, Who ever
put the car back together used any part they could find like, 1967 Tail lights 67 Left front fender “sloppy
hole cut for side marker”. After removing the fenders I also found that the car had been crashed, the firewall
is damaged by the heater box and sub frame is bent.…
September 1999
my Dad helped me move the car from Southern California to Denver. "Thanks
Dad" I drove it around for about 4 weeks just to find out that it was a
death trap. Bad brakes, a very strange noise coming from the rear of the car all the
time. The front sub frame bushings missing or trashed, made the front end loose. Transmission jumps out of gear all
the time. All the normal stuff a 32 year old car has and a lot more.
Work Starts:
It's funny how the human mind works. The first thing I bought for the car was a new steering wheel.
Step 1:
At first I thought I would just fix a little at a time. Before I knew it the car was dismantled.
Removed the rear end, suspension, gas tank, and every thing from the back seat
to tail lights. I couldn't find a Camaro 12 bolt for under $1300.00, so I
traded the Firebird 10 bolt "that was in the car" and some other stuff for a Chevelle 12 bolt. I know
this guy that buys all the Chevelle 12 bolts he can find and cuts them apart and
sets them up for 1st generation Camaros. When I got the housing back from
fabrication I installed an Eaton Posi receiving unit, Strange gears 3.73, Mooser
Axels. New leaf springs to replace the tired 4 leafs with Global West 175lbs
rating and 3/4 loaded to help stop wheel hop, and new bushings from PST.
Remember that noise and vibration I was talking about. It was the transmission,
"bent out put shaft". I found a straight used one that was in really
good condition and rebuild the trans. The drive shaft was junk some one had
tried to fix the noise by messing with the drive shaft, the timing was off and
had weights all over it. I sent it out to be fixed. The under carriage is a
factory dusk gray OEM Paints helped and I got it from Classic Industries.
I will post the
after pictures later.
